After securing approval for China–U.S. traffic rights and completing a one-month trial operation, Xi’an Xianyang International Airport has officially launched its Xi’an–Chicago intercontinental all-cargo service. Operated jointly by Chinese and U.S. partners using aKalitta AirB747-400F freighter, the route will run three scheduled flights per week.
The service will primarily serve Shaanxi’s six pillar industries while expanding into emerging segments such as cross-border e-commerce and fresh cold-chain logistics. Annual cargo volume is expected to reach 17,000 tonnes, boosting Xi’an’s international air cargo throughput by approximately 25%.
As a comprehensive international aviation hub, Xi’an is rapidly enhancing its role as a western gateway. The airport has achieved full cargo network coverage to eight cities across five Central Asian countries, and operates stable all-cargo services to six cities in five European countries. Leveraging China’s most connected domestic air network, Xi’an applies a “bellyhold + freighter” dual model to integrate domestic and international networks, optimizing resource allocation and enabling end-to-end logistics solutions for enterprises.

The Xi’an–Chicago route marks a strategic shift toward a “hub-and-spoke” logistics model. By linking with major China–Europe Railway hubs in Budapest, Madrid, and Milan via Xi’an’s rail consolidation center, the route creates a multimodal “Air–Rail Asia–Europe + Transatlantic Air” corridor, further integrating Western China into global industrial and supply chains.
