At the Paris Air Show, AirAsia signed a landmark agreement with Airbus to acquire 70 A321XLR aircraft—50 firm orders and 20 options—valued at USD 12.25 billion. This move marks a major milestone in AirAsia’s transformation into the world’s first low-cost narrowbody network carrier.
The signing ceremony was witnessed by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, underscoring strong national support. Aircraft deliveries will take place from 2028 to 2032.
Tony Fernandes, CEO of Capital A, stated:
“We revolutionized low-cost travel in Asia. Now, we’re ready to do it again—globally.”
The A321XLR and A321LR will serve as key enablers in expanding beyond ASEAN into long-haul markets like Central Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
Christian Scherer, Airbus Chief of Commercial Aircraft, emphasized:
“The A321XLR opens new route possibilities, connecting secondary cities efficiently.”
The aircraft brings a 20% fuel-efficiency improvement per seat and supports AirAsia’s goal of sustainable operations via its Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok hubs.
By 2030, AirAsia aims to carry 150 million passengers annually and reach 1.5 billion cumulative travelers—cementing its position as a global leader in affordable, scalable air travel.
